COME rain, snow or shine, Christine Stokes has been out in all weathers helping children cross the road safely to school.

And after 27-years-old, Mrs Stokes has put away her lollipop and will join the children at Christ Church CE Primary School in Ainsworth inside the building.

For it definitely is a case of au revoir rather than goodbye as Mrs Stokes is the school's new caretaker.

She said: "I only meant to do the job for six years but I enjoyed it so much I stayed for 27 years.

"I started doing this job to fit round by family, my son Stephen started the school in September and he is now 32.

"I am now helping the children of children I helped cross!".

Mrs Stokes, who lives in the village, said: "I am looking forward to a new challenge — and will be at school over the holidays."

Having covered the position temporarily she is looking forward to doing the job on a permanent basis.

To wish her good luck in the new job she was presented with presents from children and the school as she completed her last crossing patrol.

She added: "My son gave me a card congratulating me, he was delighted he got the job.

"Everyone oat the school has been so nice."
