BOLTONIANS have been basking in the first signs of summer sunshine this week.

From Horwich to Kearsley, those fortunate enough to be able to enjoy the glorious weather took the opportunity to take a stroll in the park, sunbathe, or soak up the sun in a pub beer garden.

Temperatures soared to 23C yesterday as the sun’s rays beamed down on the town.

Sadly, the clear azure skies and balmy temperatures are only expected to last as long as Saturday afternoon, with forecasts predicting rain throughout next week.

But while the weather does persist, fire chiefs are warning people of the dangers of swimming in open water and asking them to take care around the waterways.

Paul Etches, head of prevention at GMFRS, said: “We need to remind people that the water can still be very cold and cause cramp and breathing difficulties, which can affect your ability to swim and get out of trouble.

“Water can be far deeper and stronger than people think and there are unknown hazards that lie beneath the surface such as rocks, shopping trolleys and broken bottles or cans. Water can be tempting especially in warm weather, but the consequences can be fatal. Roughly half of people who drown had no intention of entering water in the first place.” Send your pictures in the sun to pictures@theboltonnews.co.uk.
