A PROSPECTIVE councillor is struggling to “stand for election” after breaking his leg.

Martin Donaghy, aged 54, is having to canvas voters by telephone after being run over by a taxi.

Mr Donaghy, who is standing in place of retiring councillor Frank White, was in London on union business, when a black cab knocked him down.

Amazingly, Mr Donaghy, was then given a lift to his Unite meeting by the taxi in question, before getting the train home to Bolton.

He then hobbled to the walk-in centre in Bolton town centre, where he was told he needed to go to hospital. X-rays at the Royal Bolton Hospital showed he had broken his fibia.

Mr Donaghy said: “I am managing to do some campaigning over the phone and my friends and colleagues have turned out in force to deliver leaflets for me.

“I would be extremely proud to be taking over from Frank. He will be a tough act to follow, but I will do my best if I am elected on Thursday.”
