SMART meters will help residents save hundreds of pounds on energy bills, a local MP has claimed.

Turton and Edgworth MP Jake Berry has welcomed the Government’s decision to roll out smart meters.

The meters will replace existing electricity and gas meters and will also have a monitor so consumers can see how much energy they are using.

They will also offer other features that householders can use to keep control of their expenditure on energy and keep their household bills as low as possible. Mr Berry said: “I have been opposed to estimated billing for some time. I think the new smart meter will not only give a more accurate figures of the gas and electricity used but I hope it will encourage suppliers to help consumers save money by switching them to more appropriate tariffs.”

The Government will set out strict guidelines for the installation of meters.

Prior to any roll out, the Government consult on issues such as privacy and accessing data.
