RESIDENTS are being encouraged to do their bit to help save the planet by recycling their Christmas rubbish.

Councillors in Bolton are hoping more people will make recycling their New Year resolution for 2008.

At this time of year there is traditionally a huge pile of waste for binmen to clear.

Cllr Elaine Sherrington, Bolton's executive member for cleaner, greener, safer said there is now no excuse for most festive waste not to be recycled or disposed of in other ways to avoid landfill.

She added: "Think a little bit before you put something in the grey bin.

"There really is no excuse now not to recycle and this is a good time of year to think about doing things slightly differently to how you have done in the past."

Among a list of top tips issued, are: Reuse Christmas cards or recycle them along with other cardboard packaging through the doorstep collections. WHSmith, Tesco, TK Maxx and Marks and Spencer all have boxes for card recycling.

If you have a gift you don't want, don't bin it, give it to charity, to someone else through www.freecycle.org or sell it on eBay or at a car boot sale.

Real Christmas trees can be cut up and put in the garden waste bin or left beside it for collection.
