BARCELONA have put Jussi Jaaskelainen top of their wish list as they chase Real Madrid for the Spanish title.

But the Catalan giants look like being frustrated in their attempts to lure the Wanderers keeper to the Nou Camp.

Jaaskelainen is determined to see out the final season of his Reebok contract before making a decision on his future.

But the very fact that the Wanderers number one is a target for one of the biggest clubs in Europe is a further indication of his standing as one of the most sought-after keepers in world football.

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, is a known admirer and former Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce has made it known that he would love to take him to Tyneside.

But Jaaskelainen's reputation has spread far beyond the Premiership.

Serie A leaders, Inter Milan, have expressed an interest and Turkey's top two clubs - Galatasaray and Fenerbahce - are keeping a watching brief, knowing the Finland international will become a free agent in the summer.

But Barcelona are understood to have made a firm enquiry in the hope of persuading Wanderers to cash in now, rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

Coach Frank Rijkaard needs back-up for his first choice keeper, Victor Valdes, while understudy, Albert Jorquera, recovers from knee surgery.

Barca had the untried Olier Olazabal on the subs' bench when they won 2-0 at Real Mallorca on Saturday to maintain their challenge on Real Madrid, who currently top La Liga.

Jaaskelainen, Wanderers' longest serving player, completed 10 years' service at the Reebok in November.

Talks over a new contract broke down earlier in the season, despite former manager, Sammy Lee, expressing a keen interest to secure his services and, although, Gary Megson rates the 32-year-old among the best in the Premiership, he says Wanderers are in no position to negotiate with any of their out-of-contract players until they know what division they will be in next season.

Megson, meanwhile, has responded to the latest round of speculation linking top scorer Nicolas Anelka with a move to Chelsea by re-asserting that Wanderers have received no official approach for the Frenchman.

Reports also claim that Anelka's former club, Manchester City, are ready to go head-to-head with big-spending Chelsea while Megson is known to have drawn up contingency plans, should he lose his 11-goal top scorer.

Real Madrid's £5million-rated striker, Javier Saviola, is one target, according to the Spanish newspaper, Marca, although the Argentinian dismissed the link when he said: "The thought of leaving Real has never entered my head."

Former Liverpool striker, Djibril Cisse, is another name linked with Wanderers, who tried to sign him last summer before he joined Marseille. But the France international, who gave the Whites little encouragement six months ago, is also wanted by Blackburn, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

One man Wanderers have confirmed an interest in is Portsmouth's versatile left-sider, Matt Taylor.

The 26-year-old was on the verge of joining Wanderers in a £3m transfer on Friday, but the move stalled when Premiership rivals, Sunderland, tried to hi-jack the deal. Aston Villa and Everton have also been linked, but Megson is hoping a resumption of talks with Pompey manager, Harry Redknapp, will bring a satisfactory conclusion.

"We've spoken to Portsmouth and I think, as far as they are concerned and we are concerned, we've got a deal between the two clubs," the Bolton boss said.

"There's five or six clubs that are interested in the lad and we were talking on Friday. I spoke to Harry and he had the game at Portman Road (Pompey beat Ipswich to go through to the 4th round of the FA Cup) and we had our game, so we said we'd resume talks on Monday."
