A horse whisperer called in to save a sick pony came up trumps.
Grey Welsh pony Carla was rescued from a field in Rochdale by the RSPCA in October last year.
The 14-year-old mare was suffering from laminitis, an inflammation of the hooves which can cause horses to become lame.
Staff at the RSPCA's Bolton branch managed to find a home for her locally and treat the disease by sedating her.
But they could not solve one problem. Every time someone went close to her, Carla would kick out.
It is essential for ponies to have their hooves checked and trimmed regularly to prevent infection.
So the team called in the help of Patrick Gracey, who trained with Monty Roberts - the equine specialist immortalised in Robert Redford's Oscar-nominated film The Horse Whisperer.
After just four sessions with Mr Gracey, who is from Ince, near Wigan, Carla picks up her feet for him. She is now so well trained that she will follow Mr Gracey when he walks away from her.

Mr Gracey, aged 43, said: "At first Carla was very nervous and aggressive but I was convinced I could help her and give her a chance.
"I think she's had a really bad experience with her feet in the past. She just needs to learn that people won't be violent and cause her pain.
"I'd love her to go to a good home now, she's an absolutely lovely pony, a real star."
Horse whispering involves communicating with horses using gentle body movements, treating them sympathetically, rather than using a whip to discipline them.
Bolton RSPCA Branch administrator Kathy Kay said the difference in Carla's behaviour was incredible.
She said: "We're so grateful for everything Patrick has done for Carla.She would have had to have been put down had he not been able to help her."

Staff will interview and visit any potential owners to ensure they are suitable.

Interesting that the RSPCA will call in an alternative practitioner when it suits them but will prosecute anyone else who dares try anything but conventional methods. . . .
