The Whites Are Staying Up

Full-time: Wanderers 2 Sunderland 0

WANDERERS are virtually guaranteed Premier League safety after a fantastic victory over Sunderland at the Reebok.

Daryl Murphy's own-goal eight minutes from time, coupled with El-Hadji Diouf's first-half strike, means Gary Megson's men will stay up barring a final day catastrophe at Chelsea.

Wanderers have a superior goal difference of 11 over Reading, who visit Derby on the final day of the season next Sunday.

It wasn't always pretty, but the Whites were well worth the points after restricting Sunderland to scraps in front of goal while creating some fine chances themselves.

Diouf opened the scoring when he finished at the back post on 42 minutes after skipper Kevin Nolan had whipped in a fine cross from the right.

The Senegalese hitman hit the post with a header, and also saw another effort go wide, but frayed nerves were eased when Murphy headed into his own net from Matt Taylor's corner.

Andy Reid thought he had cleared the ball but it had clearly crossed the line and Wanderers fans could start the We're staying up' chants.

The closest Sunderland came to scoring was when Kenwyne Jones somehow failed to connect with Roy O'Donovan's cross when the slightest touch would have brought a goal.

Wanderers: Al-Habsi; Steinsson, Cahill, Andy O'Brien, Samuel; McCann; Diouf, Nolan, Guthrie, Taylor; Davies. Not used: Meite, Stelios, Cohen, Rasiak, Walker.

Sunderland: Gordon; Collins, Nosworthy (Murphy 61), Evans, Higginbotham; Richardson, Whitehead, Miller (Leadbitter 61), Reid; Chopra (O'Donovan 61), Jones. Not used: Subs: Yorke, Fulop.

Referee: Martin Atkinson (Yorkshire).

Attendance: 25,053.

Just been watching it on the TV. Couldn't be there at the Reebok.

I said months ago that 36 points would be enough.

I thought the fans today were absolutely brilliant. I could hear them on the TV. It seemed like they never stopped.

Hopefully this summer will see some positive improvements to the squad.

Well done Wanderers, Megson and Gartside. Can't believe the pillo**s on here are still being negative! A job done is a job done, end of.
As for Allardyce, 'are you watching' big head, big mouth!?!? From the mess you left us in, we are still in there despite your ashamed style of football and destroying the backroom.
Next season could will be fine.

Great win - well done the fans for their part - but there were some really poor so called footballers out there this afternoon - McCann; Samuel; Taylor were very poor. I thought Megson would have brought Stelios for the last few minutes. I expect Garside will come out and tell the fickle fans he was right all along in the appointment of Megson and we will be stuck with pair for another season

says alot for the so called best league in the world when a team as bad as the whites have been this season can stay in there so easily and now without having to spend to much to stay just in front of the newly promoted clubs we only have to be better than west brom to stay up as the other two will be worse than derby were this year.we need to spend at least 30 mill but with 15 from anelka and at least 5mill fron diuofy that leaves the so called backers of bolton to cough up 10 mill bet we spend less than the 15 we got for anelka, heres to a very quiet close season from the bolton board.

Great win for the whites and well done to all the players . It must of been a hard game to play in and it showed at times , but who cares . Well done to mr megson for keeping us up , but still dont think ,he is the man for are club . The spending must start straight away and get our players in early . We need more class in midfield and upfront , everybody knows that. Hats off to kev davies today , if he doesnt get our player of the year , theres no justice. The battering ram . Good luck to dioufy aswell , what a great leaving present for us . If the lad wants to play else where , hope it goes well . He as been a good player for us and with the 5 million , we get for him , a good replacement is needed. Well done the whites and we are staying up .

I disagree.
The squad is not far off what SA left us with. The football and late restults with SA weree no different to what we have been watching.
GM was a good choice to dig us out of the hole SL got us into - and who brought SL to the club? SA!!
Of course, SA did something special for us. But he TOTALLY ruined it by taking his backroom staff with him. How much did he care about this club? Not a lot judging from the timing of his latest outburst. He cares only about himself.
GM got it right in the end. FACT.

I've criticised Megson and Gartside, but maybe Megson could do what Big Sam did for us after all. The players have backed him and they have all pulled together at the end of the season and dug ourselves out of a massive hole somehow. When Megson took over, everybody seemed to agree that safety was the target and that Megson had done his job well if we stayed up. Because when he came in, we were behind Derby and bottom of the league.

As bad as we have been this season, it was because there was so much change at the club at the back end of last season. Maybe some stability again would do us good.

With Diouf going, that will give us an extra £5million at least to spend on new players. We will spend around £15million this summer. And with the players Megson signed in January, we could have a decent season next year. He signed 3 good players in January with Cahill, Steinsson and Taylor coming in.

Cohen was a bad signing and Rasiak was a desperate last minute waste of time loan signing. Every team signs some bad players though. Megson could do nothing to stop Anelka going to be fair.

Maybe if he can sign a decent striker or two in the summer, we will have a better season next year. We'll need a midfielder or two as well. Guthrie will be leaving, unless we sign him for £2million, and Campo will probably leave. If Dzemaili stays he might be able to replace Campo. He is a very good prospect for the future.

Megson won't be sacked after we have stayed up. So he'll get his chance to build his own team now and have a full pre season to prepare for next season. He'll get his chance next season, and if we carry on to struggle, he'll get sacked as Sammy Lee did.

If we maintain the work rate and effort of the last 4 games, we will have a good season next year.

The results couldn't have gone any better for us today. After the Villa match, we looked dead and nobody could see us surviving. The team has shown great character to come back from that. Fantastic atmosphere today, the crowd fully played their part.

Well, I'm over the moon. Fantastic effort to get out of the relegation hole. Can't believe people on here still moaning - I'm really hoping that many of the moaners will keep their promise and don't bother going next year - we can do without you honestly. Megson might not be God's gift to management but give him credit - he has kept us up. What was our position when he arrived? Also, how many people on here are going to keep jibbering about Cohen(cheapo gamble) and Rasiak(he is on loan - not a purchase). Funny how his actual buys are forgotten about. If Gartside and Megson have a similiar 'disaster' next year and we stay up, I'll be happy.

Blimey there's some garbage on here!

When Megson says 'we were struggling after the first 20 minutes of the first game' he wasn't far wrong! All along he's been trying to correct the mistakes of Little Sam to the best of his ability and keep us in this division........and he's done it!10 points out of the last twelve is pretty impressive stuff in a relegation battle!

I despair at the people who come on here demanding changes that aren't necessarily going to improve the team.

Brownie would be a gamble at this level!

With more investment, I would keep things as they are. For me stability is everything and to start changing things around again would be to the detriment of this fine football club!!

Onwards and upwards!!

Top result or should I say results, after the Villa game I was sure we were going down, but with 4 clean sheets in five we have for me crossed the Premiership touchline, I have just seen the Diouf "I am leaving interview on the bbc website" and although he may leave he will have left us on great terms after scoring a much requested goal to set up a grand victory, the second goal was and I state was scored by the Reebok crowd who were magnificent today, Pedro a regular on this site was crying out all week for supporters to attend the game, the fact is those who did go were given theatre type compulsive viewing - that is Premiership compulsive viewing so well done to the great Bolton fans today - hope to see you all there next season.

KEEP THE FAITH - (you bet I did)

1. We just won THE most important game of the past few years. Fantastic!

2. We stay up, so we don't loose the 15 million pounds in tv rights + ticket sales etc.

3. We have the next few months to buy a true replacement for Anelka and for the others who will be leaving (make Diouf an offer he can't refuse).

4. We must get shut of Gartside (even if GM stays, which I'm not suggesting, we must still make getting shut of Gartside a priority) ! After all that's happened, there is no support and confidence in the management. We need to rebuild this for next season.

BUT - let's not loose sight of todays amazing result while thinking of the future.

GET THE DEADWOOD OUT

ANDY O'BRIEN OUT = POOR MIKE WHITLOW

SAMUEL OUT = BAD FIRST TOUCH AND TERRIBLE DENFENSIVELY

JOEY OBRIEN = NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR PREMIER LEAGUE

MC CANN = SLOW AND CLUELESS GIVES BALL AWAY TOO EASILY

GUTHERIE = NO END PRODUCT BUT COULD GET BETTER WITH QUALITY PLAYERS AROUND HIM.

WE NEED A SOLID PACY STRONG BIG CENTRE HALF

TWO CENTRE MIDFIELDERS ONE STOPPER WITH PACE AND ANOTHER WHO CAN SCORE FROM DISTANCE

TWO QUALITY CLINICAL STRIKERS BOTH NEED T HAVE PACE.

COME ON GARTSIDE PULL YOUR FINGER OUT

thought nolan was fantastic today.

diouf is going to take some replacing, he is the only one with the abilty to beat the opponent which is quite scary in a team with 11 players, to replace him we are gonna have to spend big time.

feindouno is the way forward

Just got in 20 mins ago and am as drunk as a skunk but it's been all worth it because the Whites are staying up. We had the better of Sunderland today and it was nice for Dioufy to sign off in front of his home support with a goal. A bit of rebuilding work needs doing in the summer, both on and off the pitch.

must disagree with Andy Obrien. Think he has done well this season. Can't now see megson leaving and now hope that he is given money to buy big over the summer. He has made some very good signings over the jan transfer window and with a summer to build i believe he can do well. He has never had it easy since he came to the club. Anelka was out of his hands and pure business sense. Do believe there will be a hugge clear out this summer. Nothing wrong with that thhough. We do need to geet behind the team and megson now and look at the long term future of our great club.

if megson picks the best starting 11 we might win more games, today he picked the best 11, it was a tremedous effort and sky sports stats recorded a new record, 1 shot on target 2 goals scored, couldnt be happier, 27 games 31 points is a decent return though in an upside down sort of way, i'd keep all those players, if we dont muck up at chelsea and derby dont disintegrate i'd keep all these for next season, sadly cohen will be there anyway poss meite, i still think dioufy might stay and how we need a creative player like him, as setanta said, best player on pitch, stelios to stay for me, hunt is staying, gardner campo possibly over the hill, who knows, megson will be here next season regardless, maybe he will learn a valuable lesson, i doubt it though, just very happy, all these players have battled hard and deserve great credit, i'm just very happy.

You've got to be having a laugh.

i. Andy OB has been superb. Imagine having Cid and Meite at the back.

ii. Samuel has filled in brilliantly for Ricky G.

iii. I'd have to agree.

iv. Mccann has been brilliant too lately.

v. Guthrie has been our only creative midfielder all season. and it's no suprise in the last few games that when he's come on, the game has changed.

well andy, at least you won't have far to travel to the chelsea game.

im not megsons biggest fan.
but, he was brought in to keep us up, and he's done that. you can't knock him for it and 10 points out of a possible 12 isnt to be sniffed at.

we are staying up.

Job Done! cannot believe people on here are still complaining. Whatever has been said before the lads were definately playing for Megson today. Calls for a few beers. WELL DONE ONCE AGAIN LADS... Made my weekend
charlie as you can see i'm very happy, however what makes you think they were playing for megson, i can assure you that players largely play for each other and the love of the game not the manager, i manage a team and they dont play or not play for me they play for themselves, do you think players wake up in the night and say, i must do it for gary, i often work harder for my boss when people call him an idiot (not), therefore when they lose were they not playing for gary, or are you still spouting the mantra. bsa is right this is still not satisfactory, we shouldnt be in this position, this time we've dug ourselves out of this, i hope gartside and megson learn from all this, i suspect not as he will happily let diouf and stelios leave, he should be killing himself to keep dioufy who is contracted to us, much as it grieves me to say, i see no choice but to give megson a go 31 points from 27 games represents something of an improvement but also in the attitude of the players, does megson deserve credit for that? do those that protested so vehemently deserve credit? 3 wins and a draw since! who knows! but it was the eleven out there who played for themselves, dioufy looked really taken aback by the fans reaction to him, i think he might stay, if he leaves, good luck, ive enjoyed watching his skill and ability, produced much more consistantly than jj another great for us. i hope you dont come on here in 12 months saying how crap megson was as you are his biggest fan, clearly. still we are both very happy tonight and ive had plenty of beers.

We are all celebrating.Fair one , so am i . but don't forget Gartside sold Anelka and never had any intention of buying a replacement. We will do what we always do every summer,ie not spend any money and rely on hard work and commitment. It will be even more direct next season if Megson is still here because he will have no option.I'm not renewing my seaso tickets if he's still around with Gartside and his penny pinching , they can both naff off.

good stuff that we stayed up this season, well done to the players

todays game was exciting merely because of the amount resting on the result. otherwise watching the wanderers this season has been tedious in the extreme and thats my last game under this regime. im boycotting and not buying another ticket until the management is changed and the philosophy of the club on the filed is to actually play football

and for anyone who thinks megson has done a good job, youre having a laugh arent you??????? it would have taken an absolutely awful manager to take down the squad we have this season and yet he nearly did it

luckily survival was salvaged from this season, but thats me done, i can see a better quality of football down the park

yeh megson nearly sank the club along with gartside & davis we got lucky .............

not sure if you were actually at the game today andy obrien and mc cann were excellent throughout, samuel although with a poor 1st touch recovered well and looked dangerous going forward and guthrie played ok aswell and as for the needs for our team the only comment i can make is us and the rest of the premier league.
