TWO women police officers were thrown to the ground and bitten as they tried to detain a man.
The man lashed out at the two officers and kicked them when they were on the ground.
The incident happened at around 7.10am on Tuesday in Bristle Hall Way, Westhoughton.
It began when the officers were called to Dixon Street, Westhoughton, by the ambulance service when a man ambulance workers were treating became aggressive.
A woman police constable and sergeant attended the scene and the man fled to nearby Bristle Hall Way.
He then turned on the women police officers as they caught him trying to get into a house.
The man threw them to the ground and kicked their legs.
One of the officers was also bitten on the left hand, while the other was bitten on the right arm.
Both officers went to the Royal Bolton Hospital to be tested for any infections that might have been passed to them.
A police spokesman said: "This type of assault is particularly serious because of the risks of catching an infection.
"The officers were just doing their duty when they were attacked and it is totally unacceptable."
