Mums in bid to keep Farnworth youths off the streets

PARENTS have launched a campaign for a new youth centre, claiming there is nothing for their children to do.

Elizabeth Brabin and Lynne Cooper, both from Farnworth, say they have had enough of their children complaining they are bored and are determined to see a new centre opened.

The women, who both live in Philips Avenue, hope to open a centre for young people in the Long Causeway area of Farnworth.

Ms Cooper, aged 39, has two daughters, Amy, aged 14, and Abigail, aged 10, while Mrs Brabin has two sons, Aaron, aged 14, and Daniel, aged 10. Mrs Brabin, aged 38, said: "The kids round here want somewhere to go so we want to sort something out for them. We're sick of them just hanging around and so are they.

"A new centre would get them off the streets and keep them out of trouble. The kids need somewhere to go and there is nowhere round here. There are facilities in the surrounding areas, but not round Long Causeway. We plan to raise enough cash to do something about it ourselves."

The two mothers are now appealing for volunteers to help them with the project.

They want to transform a disused brick building at the end of Alexandra Road into a base for local youngsters.

The building has been closed for a number of years and they are now in the process of establishing who owns it so they can try to broker a deal to bring it back to use. There are also plans to erect goalposts in a nearby field.

Local residents and businesses are being urged to back the project.

Anyone who would like to get involved should contact Elizabeth Brabin on 07961 741271.
