UPDATE
A BODY discovered in a Smithills field is that of a 66-year-old man, police have confirmed.
Officers were called to the scene, off Smithills Dean Road, at 8.30pm.
They cordoned off an area close to the body and launched a bid to establish what had happened.
It has since emerged that detectives are not treating the death as suspicious.
The man is believed to have been walking in the area when he collapsed and died.
A close friend was at the scene last night to aid police with their inquiries.
The man has not been named or formally identified.
