BOLTON has never been short of comic talent.

Now a comedy night for up-andcoming comedians has showcased the new breed of funnymen hoping to be the next big thing.

Bolton Wanderers, pies, Primark, relationships and diets were among the topics given a comical spin at The Bleachworks, Dunscar Business Park, Blackburn Road.

Nine novice comedians took to the stage for five minutes each in a bid to impress the audience and three judges, in an X Factorstyle contest during the new Fallout Comedy Night.

Bolton comedian Lee Tommo, who organised and compered the event, said: “We’ve got somebody who has never done it before, some have done a dozen, I think the most is 24 gigs.”

Professional comedian Ben Lawes, from Astley Bridge, kicked off the night’s entertainment and was also on the judging panel, marking each hopeful out of 10.

Ben has been a stand-up comedian for four years and plays gigs all over the UK. He said: “Kudos to anyone who gets up there and does that.

“It was a good night with a great atmosphere. The crowd relaxed.

“I think that everyone did a good job.

“I’ve not been in this environment for a long time, so it’s nice to go back and see new starters.

“The one thing I did pick up on was not learning your stuff. It’s only five minutes, if you’re that serious about it you should know your stuff before you go on.”

Darren King was delighted to win the contest, scooping a prize of £75 and a return spot, thanks to his rib-tickling, selfdeprecating routine. Darren, from Wrexham, said: “This is my 11th gig—my first was in April.

“I’m absolutely made up. I’ve got three children so I told my wife and kids if I ever won any money we would share it so they will be chuffed with their £15.”

Joe Hughes, from Wigan, came second with his routine which included jokes poking fun at his hometown.

And despite never having done stand-up comedy before, Andy Warner, 47, from Tonge Fold, bagged third place, after a routine containing quips about his life and work. He said: “I’m a music producer and everything I said really happened.

“I’m very flattered (to have come third). I might do it again, I’ve got to think of something else to say.”

A collection was held to raise money for Bolton Hospice.
