POLICE are warning people not to give personal details over the phone after being made aware of a scam.
A resident in Bolton contacted officers after receiving a call from someone claiming to be from Virgin Media, saying she had downloaded something with a corrupted file and they could sort it out for her.
She told them she did not want them to deal with it and hung up.
When she dialled 1471 there was not a number and she contacted Virgin Media who confirmed that no one had called her as they keep a record.
A police spokesman said: “If anyone receives any calls like this please do not pass any personal details and always check with the company direct after replacing the receiver that this has occurred.”
