A HUSBAND must carry out unpaid work for attacking his wife.

Luqman Patel, aged 28, of Moorlands View in Deane, admitted a charge of common assault against Jamila Suleman, who he is divorcing.

Bolton Crown Court heard Patel confronted Ms Suleman at a home in Wentbridge Road, off Chorley Old Road, accused her of cheating then grabbed her, pushed her face to the wall then pushed her from behind, causing her to fall to the floor on May 8.

Michael Maher, prosecuting, said the victim was then kicked while on the floor then he grabbed her throat, squeezed it and then threatened to kill her.

She had lumps to the back of her head and bruises to her left knee.

Patel has a previous conviction of common assault and possessing an offensive weapon from January, 2005, from an incident with a ticket inspector where he revealed a hammer, which is used for putting cricket stumps into the ground.

Judge Timothy Clayson, sentencing, said: “Quite obviously there is a background to this. Clearly you were emotionally very disturbed at the time. What you did was to cause relatively minor injury. I don’t think you present any risk of behaving like this again.”

He was sentenced to a 12 month community order with 40 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay Ms Suleman £200 compensation. A six month restraining order was made, preventing him from contacting his ex-wife.
