UNROADWORTHY taxis were removed from the streets in a festive crackdown.

As holidaymakers took to the skies for the festive period on Christmas Eve, officers from Greater Manchester Police’s road policing unit took to the roads to run an operation at Manchester Airport.

Police, working with the Vehicle Operators and Standards Agency (VOSA), removed 18 vehicles from the road after finding defects so serious that the taxis could not continue in service. Council licensing officers also suspended the licences of a further four drivers for not complying with vehicle regulations.

Insp John Armfield, who headed the operation, said: β€œIt is always disappointing to find so many vehicles in such a poor state of repair that they have to be immediately removed from the road.”
