Bolton’s oldest pub moves into the computer age

A NEW film has been produced which tells the story of Bolton’s oldest pub.

Ye Olde Man and Scythe in Churchgate closed its doors in October but was later rescued by entrepreneur Richard Greenwood.

He reopened it a month later, pledging to preserve its character but also to turn it into a tourist attraction.

The pub dates back to 1251 and is thought to be one of the four oldest public houses in England.

Mr Greenwood commissioned the film — which can be viewed on the video sharing website YouTube — which shows sepia images and video clips of both the inside and outside of the building, along with facts about the pub’s history.

An “augmented reality” still image of the pub has also been produced which shows contextual information when viewed on computer tablets and smartphones.

Mr Greenwood, aged 37, worked as a consultant for bars and hotels around the world before taking the reins at the Man and Scythe.

He said: “It took about three weeks to put together and we’ve gone over the history of the pub — I think people will find it quite interesting.

“The augmented reality is a still picture which comes to life and people jump back when they see it.

“Hopefully it will bring more people to see the pub and we’d like to get it out there to local organisations.”

“We wanted to make more of its history, and turning it into a tourist attraction is still something I’d like to work together with the council on.”

Mr Greenwood added that people have reacted favourably since he took over.

He said: “Things are going fantastically and the response has been really good. People are just happy for the place to be open."

Suffers from a need for some script editing... and even then more time should be shaved off it. Needs to have more punch to grab people's attention. In the long run, look at something like The Trip: http://www.triptojer
usalem.com/ rather than what currently pops up in Google: http://partyboysuk.t
ripod.com/index.htm

Just to add, that the new site, http://www.manandscy
the.co.uk, doesn't show up until the 3rd page on a Google search and it's blank anyway. From a marketing/promotion angle, that's pretty poor. Hopefully it''ll be live by the time the vid gets more viewings.

A well presented and informative video, well worth visiting. Cider from the barrel was always a popular drink at the pub.

Excellent, informative and spell-binding. I hope the council gets behind this and promotes it on their website too. A great resource aid for teachers in Bolton schools as well. Well done all involved. I will be sharing this on the usual social media platforms and urge others to do the same.

Bolton council won't promote it as it doesn't mention all the restaurants that will be open during the daytime for all the 20,000 town centre workers or the fact that Bolton Town centre is the most bustling thriving town centre in the country!!!

Sadly, this video lacks the warmth and sense of humor that Bolton is renowned for.....But still great that someone has took the time and trouble to do this, you have my admiration.....So 9 / 10 for effort
Myself and other people that comment on this video, should give it the thumbs up and try to do one of our own...Or at the very least, support the pubs that are fast dissapearing

I applaud the idea of the film, but maybe a truthful view of Bolton TC should be in the sequel lol

The video is a good effort but I think the non stop music is a bit detracting from the commentary. I think a virtual tour of the pub would have been better.
