‘Why did my guinea pigs have to die?’

A VETERINARY practice has launched an investigation into how two animals died after being treated there.

Katie-Louise Allen took both her guinea pigs, George and Henry, to Companion Care vets, based at the Middlebrook Retail Park in Horwich, after George cut his eye on some straw.

The 21-year-old law student says the two 18-month-old guinea pigs were both “perfectly healthy” but after the vet administered an injection for “itchy skin” they changed and stopped eating — losing “half their body weight in a few days”.

Ms Allen said it was the first time she had visited the surgery and chose it because of its flexible opening hours.

She took Henry along to keep George company and, while at the surgery, the vet did a routine check on them both before giving them a jab.

A week later, she took the animals back for their second dose and told the vet they had been acting strangely but says she was told it was normal.

Ms Allen said: “Almost immediately my guinea pigs started to deteriorate. They were not eating and rapidly losing weight.

“I booked another emergency appointment for them and saw a different vet.

“She stated they had lost more than half of their body weight in a few days and prescribed a food substitute I had to administer through syringes as they were no longer strong enough to eat themselves.”

Ms Allen spent £300 on treatment for the guinea pigs and says she could not afford the £400 it would cost for a postmortem to find out what had caused her pets’ deaths.

She added: “I have kept guinea pigs for 18 years and have never known anything like what I have witnessed in the last month.

“I accept my guinea pigs are now gone forever before living even half of their expected life plan.”

Companion Care Vets customer services manager Sarah Hibbert said the case was being investigated.

She added: "We recognise the distress of losing a pet and offer our sincere condolences to Miss Allen.

“We are currently investigating the circumstances of this case and until our internal investigations are complete we are unable to make any further comment."

This does not suprise me!!!!!!
I had the unfortunate need for the Vet when my old dog collapsed and started to fit. I called them to get acess to an emergency vet which i was refused.
sadly my dog died before I could get him treatment from another vet as I wasted so much time begging for help from these people
Would I advise any one use these vets.... NO!!!!!
But I can recommend a great vet also located in Horwich if anyone needs them

Worst vets in the world. it was the only local vets open at the time I had an emergency with my dog and when we arrived with a very sick dog they
refused to see her as she was not registered with them and I could not register her that day.

More interested in money and procedure than animal welfare, horrible po faced arrogant receptionist and just and an all round bad service.

AVOID THESE VETS AT ALL COSTS!

That's awful!! There are enough sickos out there hurting and abandoning animals. To refuse animals decent medical care is ridiculous, it cost a fortune to see a vet and to then have something like that happen is cruel. Im glad i've never taken my dog there will be sticking to the usual vets!

We have used this veterinary practice since it opened, & can't praise the care & service that our two 15 year old dogs have received highly enough. I would have no hesitation in recommending them, & regularly do to both family & friends.

I can recommend animal trust vets army care on castle st in bolton.
My cat was injured out of hours and I was getting nowhere trying to get a vet to see her.
A friend told me about the animal trust vets, I rang them and they told me to come straight away and they saw my cat.
The vet I think was called Gareth and he was brilliant.
He tried to save my cats leg. Unfortunately it was so badly damaged they amputated it.
Friendly, helpful, understanding and not expensive plus just at the end of the phone day or night.

The veterinary "trade",as it has become,is far removed from the service we knew only a few years ago.
The plethora of chains have sprung up,not because of a sudden urge to help animals, but to suck every last penny from an, up to now, unsuspecting public and make millions from what once was a profession to be proud.

Can't blame the vets for testing their new "itchy skin" drugs on them. The clue's in the name really.

i am disgusted to hear about the care these vets provided for these 2 poor innocent guinea pigs. How can they think them symptoms are normal. Poor little animals have lost their lives cos of the carelessness of these vets. Hope they are ashamed of themselves, the money grabbing arfwits. Definately dont care about animal welfare at all.
My heart goes out to the owner and the little piggies.
