GREATER Manchester Police has announced the appointment of Ian Hopkins as deputy chief constable.

He has held the position temporarily since December, 2011, and will still have overall responsibility for the force’s performance, budget cuts and corporate communications.

Chief Constable Peter Fahy said he was delighted and added: “He was appointed on a temporary basis 12 months ago and has provided strong leadership through a difficult period of budget cuts, change and serious incidents ensuring that performance has nevertheless improved.

“He has wide operational experience and a record of driving innovation and better service to the public.

He is well suited to meet the challenges of the next few years.”

Mr Hopkins said: “I have been extremely proud to be the deputy chief constable of Greater Manchester Police since 2011. The past year was a very challenging one for the force and I’m pleased to have been able to contribute, helping to keep the people of Greater Manchester safe.

“The challenge ahead is considerable, but I am totally committed to helping officers and staff to continue to deliver an improved performance for the people that we serve.”
