A MAN has died after being hit by a train in Bolton town centre.

It happened just before 9pm on Saturday, on the railway line near Clive Street.

Emergency services and the British Transport Police were called to the scene, where the man’s body was found.

It is not known how or why the man was on the track, but a police spokesman said there was nothing to suggest the death was suspicious.

The Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “We were asked to help British Transport Police in dealing with a report of a male hit by a train in the Clive Street area of Bolton that occurred at about 8.50pm on Saturday.”

Neither police force was able to provide the age or identity of the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A transport police spokesman said officers were investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Two police officers were at the stretch of line, between Bolton and Hall i’th’ Wood stations, on Sunday morning, carrying out a search of the area near the tracks.

Police said a file was being prepared for the coroner.

Northern Rail trains were temporarily stopped following the incident and while the body was brought up from the railway line.Buses replaced trains between Clitheroe and Bolton, with journey times delayed by up to 45 minutes. A normal service was resumed on the line yesterday morning.
