COUNCILLORS have voted in support of the demolition of a chimney at St John the Evangelist Church in Wingates.

Listed building consent is being sought for the church, which is in Chorley Road, to remove a 1940s chimney on the chancel wall on the north side of the building.

The chimney is no longer used.

Members of Westhoughton Town Council approved the plans.

Cllr David Chadwick, who represents Westhoughton Central ward, said: “The chimney is causing a number of problems in and around the church organ. The church would like to remove it to avoid any further intake of water.”

Cllr Gill Williams, who represents Daisy Hill Ward, added: “The chimney isn’t doing anything for the building in terms of aesthetics. It’s doing damage.”
