‘Please return my mobility scooter’

A PENSIONER says he has become a prisoner in his own home after thieves stole his mobility scooter.

William Doel is desperate to trace the blue Monarch XL8 scooter which he relies upon to get about.

The 67-year-old has been using a mobility scooter for 13 years since he had a stroke. He has also suffered five heart attacks.

Mr Doel said: “I have lost my independence now. I cannot get out to go to the shops or anything. I am stuck in my home.

“I am desperate to get it back as I had a severe stroke and cannot walk. I know the police are looking for it and I have also asked the bin men and post lady to keep an eye out for it too.”

The scooter, which cost about £3,000, was stolen from outside his home in Deane Church Lane, Deane, between 11pm on Thursday, January 10, and 8am the next day.

The electric scooter needs a key to run and a charger for the battery, both of which Mr Doel has.

He added: “I am in shock that someone would take it and I don’t know how they did.

“I have kept it under the window so I can keep an eye on it since I moved here two years ago. I have got the charger and key so it is useless to the thieves, but everything to me.”

He said a neighbour across the road got up at 5am and thought it was still there.

Mr Doel said he thinks the type of scooter he had in blue is quite rare as he has been riding around Bolton on it for years and has never seen another blue one.

Police said that they are investigating the incident and inquiries are continuing.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

can these scooters not be insured the same way as cars are? Just a thought. In a way, even more important that they are. If my car is stolen, it is an inconvenience but I can still use public transport. If I was disabled and someone stole my 'wheels' the effect would be devastating. Hope it is soon found - along with the thief; wonder if it was stolen for just scrap value? Hope not. Some people will steal anything without any thought for the consequences on the owner
