n VOLUNTEERS are needed to help plan this year’s Horwich Races. The races will take place on the same weekend as Horwich Carnival — on June 15 and 16.

Organisers are hoping that having both events on the same weekend will bring more people to the town.

They want to build on the success of last year’s celebrations and become part of the “legacy of the Olympic Games”.

The main race day, on Sunday, June 16, will be a culmination of five days of sporting activity in and around Horwich, where there will be numerous events for young people.

South East Lancashire Orienteering Club are behind this year’s street orienteering event, which is in its third year and will be part of a weekend of urban orienteering.

These will include events around Salford and Manchester on Saturday, June 15, and there will be sprint distance races on Sunday, June 16.

A prologue sprint in Lever Park will be followed by a mass start sprint final around Horwich town centre.Cycle group members are exploring new ventures for the day, as well as variations to the running events.

Organisers are looking for volunteers who are able to help in the planning stages and on the day. Anyone who can help should call Neil on 01204 693070 or Barbara on 01204 695742.
