THE European debate has reached a fascinating stage in that we are being asked to believe that David Cameron has, without any support from the rest of the EU, risked all in getting a result at a referendum acceptable to the British electorate. It has been said that the speech was first cleared by Angela Merkel and she had no objections, as the speech was in favour of a more efficient EU.

I believe this is true. The Germans are being held to ransom, as paymasters, to the southern countries. There is a meeting of minds in that it suits the Prime Minister to get his party onside and Angela Merkel gets her message across by not disagreeing.
