A FATHER and son have been recognised with a national award for setting up a charity to help widowed dads and their families.

James Edgington, aged 29, and his father, Graham, aged 56, who found fame on Britain’s Got Talent, were recognised at the Flame Awards for their work creating the Jennifer Charity.

The charity was launched by Father and Son, as they are best known, in 2010, in memory of Jennifer, James’ mother, who died in a car crash in snow when he was 16 months old.

Singer and actor James, from Harwood, said: “The ceremony was amazing. It was really good. There were some inspirational people there who were just so warm, kind and receptive to the charity.

“I think the Jennifer Charity was recognised because it’s the only one in the UK that deals with widowed dads.

“It started as quite a small thing and is now reaching people nationally and internationally.

“We hoped the charity would take off, but the awareness we have made has been incredible.”

The ceremony went ahead at the Hilton in Manchester on Friday despite the snow.

The Flame Awards, which are run by the International Fire and Rescue Association, celebrate the efforts of UK-based community groups, volunteers, charities, schools and the emergency services.

The ceremony was hosted by Denise Welch, the former Coronation Street actress, Celebrity Big Brother 2012 winner and Loose Women star.

The Jennifer Charity helps youngsters who, like James, have no memory of their mothers.

It offers respite care for families as well as help to provide psychological and bereavement support.

It also offers one-to-one support to grieving fathers and their children to help them cope with the loss of their loved ones, as well as vocational breaks and child care.

The award is the second accolade for the father and son, who also claimed a prize at the Pride of Bolton awards last year.

The pair performed This Is The Moment, from the Jekyll and Hyde musical, to guests at the ceremony.
