RESIDENTS are being warned to be vigilant for burst pipes as the weather warms up following the cold snap.

United Utilities have launched a special leakline for people to report the increasing numbers of leaks and bursts that are expected to hit water pipework as temperatures rise.

Over the last six months in Bolton, the company has repaired 460 leaks.

This figure could double after a cold spell. As the ground thaws it puts stress on the network of underground pipes, causing them to leak.

Stuart Atkinson, United Utilities' regional water net-work manager, said: β€œIt is not unusual to see the number of leaks and bursts increase when the temperature shifts after a cold snap. The public can help us by reporting any leaks they spot on the roads or pavements.”

The free Leakline number is 0800 330033.
