KEEP-fit enthusiasts will really be getting themselves in a spin as they embark on a marathon fundraiser next month.

Members of Horwich Leisure Centre will saddle up as they get in gear to take part in a six-hour spinning class to raise thousands of pounds for Guide Dogs.

Spinning is high intensity indoor cycling on stationary bikes.

John Sandiford, who has a guide dog called Inca and has been spinning for five years, put forward the idea after hearing the leisure centre wanted to do something for charity.

Mr Sandiford, aged 43, said: “I suggested a spinathon — there will be 15 of us spinning for six hours for the Guide Dogs charity, and there is a waiting list of people who want to do it if anybody has to drop out.”

Many of the people taking part are friends who know each other through the leisure centre.

“I don’t think many of us will be walking the next day,” said Mr Sandiford, who is originally from Horwich but now lives in Bolton.

If the group raise £2,500, they will be offered the chance to name a puppy.

Mr Sandiford said: “Having a guide dog gives me independence and I am able to get out and about a lot more than I would be able to.

“Guide Dogs make a huge difference.

“The cost of Inca over her lifetime will be £50,000 but she only cost me 50p.”

Spinners will be supported by guide dogs on the day of the event, February 23, starting at 9am.

But now the fundraisers are busy training for the spinathon, including Mr Sandiford, who has stepped up his fitness regime in preparation.

The spinners will be given nutrition advice on what to eat to keep their energy up on the day.

But Mr Sandiford admitted: “We are all going to the pub afterwards!”
