Gaming future for Jessops store

THE former Jessops photography shop in Bolton is to become a bookmakers.

Ladbrokes is to close its branch in Great Moor Street and transfer to the former Jessops outlet in neighbouring Newport Street.

The betting company has asked Bolton Council for permission to change the use of the building so it can begin trading.

The council is aiming to reach a decision by March 18.

Last year, Ladbrokes closed its branch in Market Street and moved to Deansgate.

Jessops closed earlier this month after the firm went into administration, with bosses blaming the recession, changing technology and the rise of internet shopping.

Welcome to Bolton - betting shops, pound shops and charity shop. Still, know at least one chief officer who will be please to see another bookies opening.

Ladbrokes are giving up the licence on the nearby Great Moor Street premises and moving to premises on Newport Street. The plans will be passed as they are merely in effect moving to a new location. Of greater concern would be why was it necessary to allow Corals to open in the original library building on Victoria Square (last used as the Nationwide Building Society). As stated elsewhere the town centre has quickly become an area of Pay-day loans, pawnbrokers and betting shops.

People need some where to spend their dole money besides the pubs.

they'd need to move anyway in the next year or so, as their premises is being bulldozed for the new bus station

I hope Rice'n'Three relocate nearby too

Look, a retailer has to look at the profile of the local footfall. What do you think this one says?
