Pupils proud to be good

YOUNGSTERS have quite literally spelled out how well their school is doing.

St Bernard’s RC Primary School has been marked as good with outstanding features by school inspectors.

Proud pupils were found to thoroughly enjoy being in school where they found lessons fun.

Ofsted reported: “Pupils achieve well in English and mathematics.

“Standards in reading are high and in writing and mathematics they are above average.”

Achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, leadership and management were described as good, with behaviour and safety of pupils rated as outstanding.

Pupils were found to be proud of their contribution to the school.

Ofsted’s report said: “The overall quality of teaching over time is good and leads to pupils making good progress.”

It added: “Teaching and learning are good across the school and so teaching is outstanding.”

Headteacher Clare Doodson was singled out for praise.

“The leadership and management of the headteacher are outstanding. She provides a very clear sense of direction based on an accurate evaluation of the school’s work,” reported school inspectors.

Inspectors said that the school could further raise standards — to an outstanding rating — by improving the quality of marking and feedback so pupils are always given good written guidance.

The school celebrated its Ofsted report by holding up cards to spell out their raiting to everyone.

Mrs Doodson said: “It is a true reflection of our school and all the hard work from everybody, especially the children.

“We know we are a good school and it is great to have that publicly recognised by Ofsted and to be able to celebrate and build on it for the future.”

Cllr Phil Ashcroft, the chairman of governors, said the dedication of fellow governors and all members of staff was reflected in the achievements and attainment of the pupils.

for a child to feel pride in its contribution towards anything can only bode good. For a child to feel valued is beyond price. Well done to this school, its staff, and its pupils
