AN event to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Bolton-born writer Allen Clarke will be held this month.
The local dialect author, who was born in 1863 and died in 1935, wrote poetry and novels as well as philosophical and political works.
He was from a working-class background and went to work in the mills at the age of 11, but went on to become a successful writer of dialect poetry.
The free talk, From Tum Fowt To Windmill Land: Allen Clarke — Bolton’s Literary Champion of the Working Classes, takes place at Bolton Central Library on Saturday, February 23, from 11am to 1pm.
Guest speakers include Dr Paul Salveson, author of Allen Clarke: Lancashire’s Romantic Radical, and Mr Clarke’s granddaughter Shirley Matthews Clarke.
