Two men who died after a collision in Boothstown have been identified.

Robert Crooks, aged 33, and Scott Best, aged 27, had stolen an Audi S4 Quattro from Boscombe Gardens, in Farnworth last Thursday night.

Minutes later they crashed in Leigh Road, in Boothstown, hitting parked cars and bursting into flames.

The pair were brothers from the Salford area. Their families have been informed and a dedicated Family Liaison Officer from Greater Manchester has been appointed.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle and remains in police custody for questioning.

Senior Investigating Officer, Police Sergeant Lee Westhead, said: "An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the collision and the events leading up to it."

Police had initially been unable to identify the men because they suffered such severe injuries. They were waiting for the results of DNA tests.

Before they stole the Audi, they had got out of a Vauxhall Vectra in Boscombe Gardens and smashed a window of a house and stole keys to the vehicle.

They threatened to shoot a neighbour, who was putting a bin out. The Audi and the Vauxhall Vectra were then driven off at speed.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the collision should contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741.
