Local firms urged to bid for a share in market revamp

BOLTON businesses are being urged to come forward and benefit from the £4.5 million renovation of the market.

Contractor Willmott Dixon is working with Bolton Council to find local sub-contractors and suppliers for the development.

An event will be held at Bolton Town Hall’s Lancaster Suite on Monday, February 25, from 9am to 5pm, for businesses keen to get involved.

Willmott Dixon is especially interested in speaking to local businesses involved in groundworks, metal works, flooring, glazing, painting and decorating, fencing, mechanical and electrical services, joinery, and roofing.

Thirty-four traders from the non-food section of the indoor market have moved to temporary units on the outdoor market and will reopen there on Tuesday.

Work on the refurbishment will be completed late this year, with the car park and servicing area being completed next year.

Council leader, Cllr Cliff Morris, said: “We are really pleased the redevelopment will provide work for local businesses, as well as jobs for local people.

“Both the council and Willmott Dixon want as many local firms as possible to get involved, and we would urge businesses to attend and find out about the different opportunities on offer.”

Improvements include refurbishing the roof on the fish market, replacing the roof on the non-food eastern hall, more indoor food stalls and a seating area in the eastern hall, and repairing the roof over the western hall, which contains the fresh fruit and vegetable traders. The outdoor market will be moved to New Street, closer to the planned new transport interchange.

While the work is under way, the market’s fruit and veg section and the fish market will be open as usual.

Guy Lacey, operations manager from Willmott Dixon, said “We support the local pound at every opportunity and these types of events are just one way we can ensure local businesses benefit.”

So the work has started but not everything is in place????
This should have been sorted months ago!!!
I predict another fiasco because of this and a failure - thus losing more people from Bolton Town Centre.

this should have been thought about before the tender was submitted/accepted - how does anyone know what these sub-contractors are going to charge, or going to have to charge?

There are two things certain about this (REVAMP).1.They will bleed the coffers dry,(pun intended).2.Fat Morris's wallet will be fatter by the time the money dissapears,AGAIN????

Mark my word this "new market" will be another white elephant just like the other new market hall.
The council destroyed a great building then and now they are set to do the same thing all over again.
Are they really wanting to destroy one of the better places in Bolton?. Have any of them walked around the market and seen how busy it is?
Clever people usually learn by their mistakes but it is very obvious that there is not even one clever person in Bolton town council.
Wake up and smell the coffee town council, you have done enough damage, now it's time to call it a day and resign, the whole lot of you , before there is no longer a town centre

WILLMOTT DIXON - who are they!!
All the local builders going into liquidation/administ
ration and the council have no power to appoint contractors to revamp our own market or town hall.
No wonder the local economy is disappearing with custodians like our Councillors continuing in their self serving ways.
I must be dreaming.

So which councillor keeps marking down the comments that actually say the truth about this project. Is it you Clifford "3 Jobs" Morris???

Truth is all this should have been sorted before it had been started - its plain and simple - no project should start until everything is place and is all priced up. Do the councillors not watch Cowboy Builders or Cowboy Trap????

Wilmott Dixon are based in Hertfordshire, could Councillor Doris and his Mafia not have awarded the contract for overseeing the project to a more local firm ? Also have any of the residents of Bolton or users/stall holders of the market been consulted on these proposed changes or did the Council once again send out their "invisible" surveys ?

New Street runs from Blackhorse Street to Ormrod Street. It's where the big trucks currently deliver to the market.

it is a car park (sort of) now. It is where the coaches park - on the opposite of the market from where the bus station is.

Marzi30 is quite correct!!! Why not give the contract to a Bolton Main Contractor. Its ok to suggest subcontractors should stay local but these Companies only get a fraction of the money spent on the works. A large Main Contractor like Wilmot Dixon will take their profit, clear off back whence they came and not put a bean of their profit back into Bolton.
