Robbers beat store worker

A HAVE-a-go member of staff who confronted a robber was hit over the head with a bottle.

The axe-wielding raiders threatened staff at the store in Tong Road, Little Lever, just before they were due to close for the night.

They targeted the Food and Tipple convenience shop at about 9.30am on Friday, just 30 minutes before they were due to close.

They threatened staff, pushing one of them away in the attack, and stole cash from the till as well as spirits and cigarettes.

Another member of staff who confronted one of the robbers in the shop was hit with the bottle, but suffered only minor injuries.

Staff activated the panic button and a passers-by who saw the robbers running away telephoned the police.

There were four members of staff on duty when the robbers stormed the shop.

They got away with £90.

Police are investigating and have been handed CCTV footage from the shop, which was open as normal the following day.

Staff were said to be left shaken by the incident. Security has now been tightened, and the shop has a guard dog.

One of the robbers was white, in his early 20s, 5ft 5in tall, of “normal” build and was wearing dark clothes.

The second was white, about 20 years old and was wearing a grey hooded top.

Det Con Ged Earley, from Bolton CID, said: “The offenders were armed with an axe and made threats of violence towards the staff.

“They stole cash and other items and assaulted one employee who challenged them as they left.

“I would like to hear from anyone who knows the identity of the robbers or saw them leaving the area afterwards.”
