‘Fast rail link should provide jobs for local young people’

A MASSIVE rail infrastructure project should be used to put local young people on the fast track to employment, Bolton West MP Julie Hilling has said.

The Government recently announced details of the building of high speed rail (HS2) routes in Britain, and Ms Hilling has backed Labour leader Ed Miliband’s call for 33,000 apprenticeships to be created as part of the scheme. She said: “When money is tight and the Government is spending billions on projects like HS2, then it really shouldn’t be too much to insist that the Government also invests in our young people.

“The building of HS2 is a chance to create a new generation of skilled British workers, rather than just waste the talent of those growing up wondering if they will ever get a decent job.” She added: “It’s not enough to just build a new route between London and Manchester. Local young people should not have to move across the country to where the new train lines are being built, so we need to give all young people everywhere a route to their futures and that starts in local schools and colleges.”

I agree - it SHOULD provide opportunities for the young in employment, but will it in reality? Oh only now do I realise how important those apprenticeship schemes of my youth were for young people. Please bring them back.

Maybe the point is too obtuse for a simple Northernert, but what is the connection? If the apprenticeships are to be in the construction industry building HS2 lines, then surely the workforce will need to move to where the jobs are. HS2 isn't going to be in local schools and colleges (or else it would be very slow). If the jobs are to be in the retail outlets at places such as the new part of Piccadilly or Victoria, then apprenticeships (of the old fashioned kind) will simply be cheaper labour replacing the minimum waged. Ms Hilling and Balls may have some deeper part to this other than the headline part of the press release, but put some depth on it, BN please. What kind of apprenticeships, doing what and where are one of Bolton's MPs and the Shadow Chancellor asking for (plus given that HS2 is at least 15 years away, and all the budget will be swallowed up by the demanding Tory voters of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire demanding their £500,000 each for 'planning blight' even if they live 5 miles away from the proposed route, I really can't see how this will make any difference to Boltonians (other than the opportunity to stand for 30 minutes into Piccadilly, go through (probably) airline type security for the right to pay £400 for a day return - of course they will have to spend an hour in the retail centre, as at Manchester Airport, to kill time once they pass security).

Can you please clarify where you get a figure of £400 for a day return ticket?

Have you not thought that the price will actually be reasonable and not much more than todays prices and teh cost of construction will be spread over numerous of years, like a normal loan?

HS1 has not created super-high prices, so why should HS2?

£400? don't make me laugh. I regularly travel between Bolton and Edinburgh for £10 each way.

I will admit I have just estimated it. BUT if I want to go to London on Monday for the day, I'm obviously going to be travelliing early and returning around 6. That'll cost me £308 so for an ultrafast train on a line devioted to high speed travel, I believe that is not a bad 'loading factor'. And I know that one can travel at very inconvenient times musch cheaper, but that FOR A DAY RETURN to London, it's really very likely that one needs to travel early. So I'll stick by my statement - guess that it was

I am assuming you are buying a first class ticker as I have just checked via www virgintrains and guess what - buy on the day and a noraml day return is only £132, using the exact same times you have used!

HS2 will take ALL London trains away from the Victorian built lines which will means more, faster and better timed local trains. Did you realise this will be the first major rail line to be buiolt between North and South for almost 125 years!!! Thats how far behiind the rest of the world we are!!!

Cheapest SINGLE cattle class 07:00 - 07:55 - £154 (can wait until 8:15 and get an advance ticket - non refundable etc). Return - yes some trains (eg 17:00 have no advance facilities) so must be £154. That makes £308. Can take risk and get an advance - £131.50: so if I'm prepared to fix to a specific train, which I can't guarantee - then that's £285.50 on Tuesday. All I am saying is that there MAY be cheaper tickets - but that won't be the HS2 business model. All cheap tickets will be anti-social hours because that's when people don't choose to travel - certainly not those with the expense accounts to fund it : social travellers - be fair can pick and choose, but the service won't be there

They are taking teh inter-city trains off the old overcrwoded Victorian Lines, quickiening the speed of both intercity (on the HS2) and local (on the Victorian) trains

It definitely is not a case of "virgin" trains via the Victorian lines and another operator vis the HS2!!!

You really should read about what teh HS2 is all about!

It about removing the fast trains to create more capacity for loacl trains - wouldn't you agree that is better locally?

If teh prices would be that astronomical do you think the HS2 would last long? considering airline prices between Manchester and London? HS2 is creating better competion against the airlines!
