Drivers fined over ‘rat-run’

MORE people have been fined after using a residential street as a “rat-run”.

Drivers have been illegally using Chassen Road in Heaton, to avoid traffic lights, despite police warning that they would be handing out fines.

Last Friday six people were fined £30 for using the road, which followed 12 drivers who were fined on Thursday.

Police, who were there between 3.30pm and 4.30pm, have run several operations in the past few weeks and motorists have been warned not to use the road as a shortcut.

PC Andy McMath said: “Local residents are pleased with the police response.”

Cllr Bob Allen added: “Let's hope it makes a difference.”

Ive seen the traffic around here and it is really bad. This solution will soon die out when the police stop attending and people start using it again. Its not really a long term solution.
Why not just close one side with bollards etc and make it accessible by one side only basically turning it into a cul-de sac. That ensures residence will be the only ones to use it and make it much safer.
The main issue seems to be the traffic from Bolton School.
All Parents on any school run need to take respopnsibility and stop being so lazy. They just park anywhere even of its unsafe for other road users or even the school children. Schools also need to start considering the extra traffic caused, why not create a drop off, pick up zone system like at manchester airport, so you drive into a space, drop off and then continue to drive through the space and out of the drop off zone and make it safer for everyone.
Something needs to be done beacuse most schools have this problem. A recent story about a Sharples School had parking issues. The school says the parents wont listen and just park where they want. Well throw their children out of the school then. If they are willing to risk the lives of bothe their own and other school children then they should have there children removed from the school. Im sure they will soon start to pay attention to letters and warnings from the school then.
Lets stop being so soft and actually do something about the problem.

Suspect it costs rather more to enforce that it generates. Money will go to treasury no benefit to local officers.

The problem with blocking it off will be that the residents will not be able to decide where to barrier should be. Just like Seymour Road a few years back.

If the police were there at the time stated how come they did not see all the parents cars parked on each side of Tudor Road half on the pavements and also on double yellow lines part blocking the road stopping vehicles and causing a tailback down the road this happens every afternoon at this time of day. Why are the police not booking these cars that are the cause of people taking short cuts in the first place.

They probably are, but the BN are not advising this as its not part of teh ongoing story with regards to Chassen Road - Editorial choice!!!

They could block the road where it meets Tudor Road. That would also stop parents parking on Chassen Road.

Then again i am sure they will wait untill a child is killed before actually doing anything about it. and im sure the child's parents will also be one of the ones parking dangerously, but will no doubt blame someone else.
