Shoplifter hid food in his jacket

A SHOPLIFTER has been given a conditional discharge for 18 months after admitting stealing food from a supermarket.

Nicola Ormerod, prosecuting, at Bolton Magistrates Court, said Wayne Davenport was seen in Asda on February 16 hiding five packets of gammon in his jacket.

The following day he went back to the same store and was caught trying to steal milk, crisps and biscuits.

Leigh Morgan, defending, said the majority of Davenport’s past offending had been to fund a heroin addiction, but he was now managing to curtail his habit.

Davenport, aged 31, of Cecilia Street, Bolton, pleaded guilty to the two offences of theft and was ordered to pay £10 compensation, £40 prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
