Councillors spend cash on the roads

COUNCILLORS in Horwich North East ward have targeted thousands of pounds on road improvements.

They used their delegated powers from Bolton Council to decide where to use the cash.

It included £1,452 spent on a bin sticker scheme to reinforce 20 mile per hour speed limits.

The council paid £12,000 for carriageway works in Ormston Avenue and £1,895 to repaint white lines along Victoria Road.

Relocating a 20mph sign in New Chapel Lane cost £100, while £85 was spent on a replacement reflector board behind a “no through road” sign in Old Lane and about £1,000 was spent connecting a light-up speed warning sign, in Church Street, to the mains.

Councillors also spent on road safety schemes, including £3,000 in Watermans Close and Longworth Road, £3,389 in New Chapel Lane, £6,600 in Stocks Park and Church Street, and £3,740 in Brazley and Claypool. They also spent £1,300 on road safety signs and stencils in Green Lane.

About time they spent money on Ormston Ave too! That road has been in a shocking state of repair for far too long. Never mind pot holes..there were lakes in it the holes were so big!

Not sure what the white lines are for on Victoria Road since most of the traffic is in the middle of the road overtaking parked cars....

The white lines were painted at the junctions of the side roads with Victoria Road, eg, Ramsbottom Road, Webb Street, Stocks Park Drive. I think also that the yellow lines were repainted at the junction of Brooklands and Victoria Road as well.

The lines were done on both sides of the road from Fox Street, so it was done in, not only Horwich North East, but also in Horwich and Blackrod, probably.

Just to add as well, the white lines were done down the middle of the road.

What a sop and a con, councillors should not decide where to spend money on the roads in the Two Town’s area. It should be done fairly from the highways dept. At Bolton, not condescendingly via the Two Towns Forum. Thus making it look like the councillors representing us are doing a good job, far better they strive for parity with Bolton for all services. It is observed that there is an invisible force field at the boundaries of Bolton with our Towns, services cease at these boundaries, no more so than the removal of fallen leaves on the roads. Recently travelling to Bolton along Chorley New Road I saw three gangs of workmen, using thousands of pounds worth of machinery clearing leaves. They had started exactly on the boundary, working towards Bolton (No leaves had fallen in Horwich?) at equal distances apart. No part of the borough should be treated differently, they should all be equal.

Its never fair Nor equal when it comes to funding, investment etc.
There is as it appears no say from anyone where or what the money should be spent on. Its a shame things are not run more effectivly, then maybe if they were me and my family would not be in such a mess, living in a 3 bed home, that my partner cannot get in and out of, we have a car he cant use, as theres a steep embankment to get up to it, so he has been housebound for a long while at only 29, i have 4 small children the youngest is very sick and has heart and lung conditions meaning she cant go out in the cold,. and despite litterally begging for help, from someone, anyone at the housing etc we have been ignored, now on friday he is having surgury so he will be unable to walk at all, and you cant get a wheelchair round this house. Yet again ive been on to them crying with no help.

So Only god can help me and my small children from now on, see if priorities and money was spent well, then im sure we could of atleast got someone to help us out the situation im trapped in.

Big deal, shame they dont spend money they have to fix the roads that are full of pot holes.I know that this has ben said before but do Bolton Council belive that the roads are going to fix themselves. Well the plan will be, lets wait until Labour get back into Number 10 and we get tens of millions to waste again then we wil do it. I for one hope that sad day never arrives.

Could have filled a few holes up with the £1452 used for stickers on bins. What is the point of that, no one will go look at their bins to remnd them of speed on road !

Surely it is the very nature of delagation that helps work get done locally. The work on Ormston Avenue is very welcome as the state of the roads has deteriorated due to the two very bad winters we had. Prior to now a patching job has taken place which hasn't gone anywhere near addressing the problem. Drivers risk damage to their cars and the possibility of accident. The first poster on this subject is absolutely right about the potholes becoming lakes they are so bad. What the BEN has not mentioned is that the drains have also been repaired prior to the re-surfacing. Also the re-surfacing has not yet taken place but is due to be done this week.
