‘Don’t scrap plans’ for minimum alcohol pricing

HEALTH chiefs in Bolton have said they would be “disappointed” if the Government scraps plans to introduce minimum alcohol pricing.

It comes after speculation that Prime Minister David Cameron may drop his plans for a base price of 45p per unit in England and Wales following criticism from senior Tory MPs.

A number of Cabinet ministers, including Home Secretary Theresa May, have made it clear they harbour doubts and have said the policy would penalise responsible low-income drinkers, rather than tackle problem drinkers.

The Prime Minister has said the Government is still examining the results of a consultation on the policy.

Yesterday he said he was “absolutely determined” to deal with the problem of “deeply discounted alcohol in supermarkets”.

He added: “We published proposals, we are looking at the consultation and the results to those proposals, but be in no doubt, we’ve got to deal with the problem of having 20p or 25p cans of lager available in supermarkets. It's got to change.”

Doctors’ leaders have urged Mr Cameron to be courageous and take a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save lives, save the country money”.

Wendy Meredith, Bolton’s director of public health, said: “It would be disappointing if, following the consultation on the National Alcohol Strategy, the government failed to implement unit minimum pricing.

“Evidence from Canada and from research conducted in this country strongly suggests that setting a minimum price at 50p a unit would save 3,060 lives, 97,700 alcohol- related hospital admissions and 42,500 crimes a year.

“All 24 directors of public health across the North West support a minimum unit price of at least 50p “In addition, pubs, bars and other on-trade premises will greatly benefit from a minimum price as it would reduce the differential in prices retailed in the off-trade and on-trade.

“This could result in a shift of drinking patterns to on-trade premises, which is a safer, regulated environment to consume alcohol and positive for community pubs.

“This is important as CAMRA reporting that 16 pubs are closing every week.”

These plans should be scrapped. Why should I pay more for my alcohol because of all these p***heads who can't drink responsible. People who go to hospital for drink related problems should have to pay for the service and any transport involved. It won't matter what the coast is as these sort of people will always find ways to pay for their drink.

This is a ridiculous idea anyway. Alcoholics and children are not going to stop purchasing alcohol because the unit price has increased by 45p.
Efforts should be made to educate people and the government should consider stopping giving benefits to people who have an addiction such as alcohol.
I agree with John Edwards, I enjoy a couple of tins on a friday and saturday night after a hard week's work, why should I be punished?

I never implied that they where. However, those that are, stop their benefits or issue them with vouchers for specific goods only.
Problem solved.

That guy Cameron is completely out of touch and now wants to deprive poorer people a few beers.

Cameron has made the right decision for once. The minimum price of alcohol policy was a disgrace and penalises sensible drinkers. Whats more all it will do is benefit the French and Belgian exchequer as the booze cruises return to Calais Boulogne and Ostend.

What planet is Wendy Meredith on? Nobody will be returning to pubs while the prices are so high for a pint in the pubs and while the smoking ban remains and while pub violence is on the increase. Pubs are not closing because of supermarket prices in the main. Pubs are closing because of the high pump prices and smoking ban. If the price of a pint was cut by 70p then maybe i would return but i won't hold my breath. If minimum pricing is brought in then i will go to Calais a few times a year and stock up.

"Reality 50" YOU AR WRONG, CAMERON DIDNT MAKE THIS DECISION! He was defeated by his own party + those traitors the lib-dems. I for one am glad he was beaten down on this one, besides MOST MODERATE DRINKERS LIKE MYSELF WHO LIKE TO HAVE A DRINK ON OCASSION. Only trouble is, its the people who buy drink for kids that spoil it for the rest of us + the odd alcoholic. SENSE HAS PREVAILED at last.
