Event offers food for thought

ANYONE interested in local food is encouraged to attend an event in Bolton on Saturday.

Feeding Manchester will feature information including a talk on growing food in wet climates and self-managing allotment sites.

Those taking part can also have a five-minute slot where they can share information about their own projects.

A spokesman for the event said: “We’re here to support groups, individuals and organisations involved in creating a more sustainable food system from across Greater Manchester.

“One of the ways we do that is by holding regular events where participants can learn from guest speakers, and share experiences while strengthening and creating new relationships.”

The event takes place on Saturday, from 9.30am until 2.30pm at the Quaker Friends Meeting House, Silverwell Street.

Anyone who wishes to take part must make a £12 contribution and places must be booked in advance at feedingmanchester.org.uk.

What anyone considering growing there own food must realise is that it is not as easy as shown on TV gardening programmes. Allotments mean a lot of HARD WORK. Look around most of Boltons allotments and you will see they are a disgusting mess ,rented by well meaning people who have not got the time required to keep them up to scratch. I keep hearing about long waiting lists for allotments , Alan Crook and the allotment secretarys should be getting there acts together and start evicting tennants who are just using plots as uncultivated rubbish dumps.Walk around most sites and you will see what i am talking about, no wonder they keep the gates padlocked. At least two thirds of most allotment sites are utter rubbish. Nothing to do with wet climates, just lazy people as usual .

"Anyone who wishes to take part must make a £12 contribution"? Surely if somebody taking part wants to make a contribution, it should be up to them how much they want to contribute. This event has been falsely advertised. It's an event that can be attended only by pre-arranagement, at a cost of twelve pounds.
