A “LOST” war memorial will be rededicated more than 10 years after it moved from Breightmet.

The memorial is now back in Breightmet at Red Lane United Reformed Church in Newby Road after it was moved from its former base at Breightmet United Reformed Church in Bury Road.

It was taken to Astley Bridge Royal British Legion for safe keeping when Breightmet United Reformed Church closed in the 1990s.

An appeal appeared in The Bolton News several years ago as it was not known where it had come from.

Residents feared the memorial would be scrapped but Red Lane United Reformed Church claimed it.

Joe Walmsley, a member of the congregation, remembered the memorial at the former church and suggested it be moved back to Breightmet as it bears the names of fallen soldiers from the area.

Restoration work has been carried out through a grant from the War Memorial Trust and church funds.

A rededication service will be held at the church at noon on Sunday, April 21. Representatives of the War Memorials Trust and The Royal British Legion will attend.
