HUNGRY families will have somewhere to turn to when a new food bank opens its doors tomorrow.

Cleggs Lane Methodist Church, in Little Hulton, is launching the service to help people struggling to put food on the table during the recession.

The outlet will be run by the same people behind the Farnworth and Kearsley Foodbank, in conjunction with national charity Trussel Trust.

It will support people living in Little Hulton, including those living on four neighbouring housing estates, and will also serve Walkden.

The Rev Philip Brooks, minister at the church, said: “We feel that the new food bank at Cleggs Lane will be a vital addition to local provision, as all the indications are that food poverty in Little Hulton will worsen.

“We are grateful to our community partners and our committed team of volunteers who have made the new venture possible.”

The new service will be launched from 11am tomorrow at the church in Cleggs Lane.

Among those in attendance will be pupils from Harrop Fold School and Dukesgate Academy, who will perform songs and poems, and Barbara Keeley, MP for Worsley and Eccles South.

Visitors will be able to find out about the food bank and the work already being done by Farnworth and Kearsley Foodbank and Trussel Trust.

The church’s community cafe will be open and visitors can view the community allotments, where produce is grown for the cafe.

The new food bank is one of several collection points being planned in the area to make the service more accessible. Organisers plan to open the next branch in Prestolee.

The service operates on a referral basis and clients are given vouchers from agencies, such as parent groups and charities.
