The sun was shining as Croydon kicked off its Heritage Festival on Saturday.

Thousands of people attended the event, organised by The Whitgift Foundation, which formed part of the three-week Croydon Heritage Festival.

The festival is a huge celebration showcasing the best of the town’s history via more than 150 events across the borough of Croydon up to Sunday, June 23, 2013.

Visitors enjoyed music, theatre and dance performances on the main stage in North End throughout the afternoon.

There was also a fancy dress competition which saw an array of different costumes on show.

People also got to find out about the history of the town with a number of different organisations on hand to promote the heritage and culture of Croydon.

There were also conducted tours of the Whitgift Almshouses with more than 180 visitors stepping through the gates.

The Whitgift Foundation’s chief executive Martin Corney, said: “The Whitgift Foundation is presenting this heritage festival, the first one of its kind, to remind the people of Croydon of the fantastic heritage and history that this town has.

“We’re delighted that we’ve been so well supported and that so many organisations around the town have become a part of the festival.”
