WHEN it comes to raising money for charity, bright youngsters at Horwich Parish CE School have certainly been using their loaf.

The young fundraisers opened a breakfast cafe to raise money for Lagan’s Foundation.

For a week children as young as five ran the cafe, serving toast, crumpets, and drinks to pupils.

Carren Bell, founder of Lagan’s Foundation, said: “The school committee, which has children from every year group on it, were asked what they would like to raise money for, and they could have chosen their school or another charity, but they chose Lagan’s Foundation.”

The children raised about £200 through the breakfast cafe.

Miss Bell said: “It was so popular they ran out of stock.”

The school has previously supported Lagan’s Foundation and has raised about £2,000 in the last two years for the charity.

Lagan’s Foundation was inspired by the memory of Lagan Katherine Anne Grant — daughter of Miss Bell and Barry Grant from Horwich — who lost her fight against a heart condition when she was only 15-weeks-old.

It is the UK’s only charity dedicated to providing help to parents in their own homes, whose babies are born with congenital heart defects (CHD).

The charity helps families across the UK and works with Liverpool’s Alder Hey Hospital to train volunteers to help families.

Miss Bell, who has a daughter Ceridwen, aged 11, and son Lochlyn, aged 17 months, said: “It is nice that the children wanted to support the charity.

“I felt quite privileged that children aged four and five know about the charity, it reminded me how much the school is part of the community.”

The money will go towards training volunteers to spend time with families who have children with CHD.
