PUB regulars inspired to raise money in memory of a popular man have donated thousands of pounds to help others.

A series of fundraising events have been held at the Bowling Green pub, in Bury Road, Bolton, since Alan Jones died 10 years ago.

The 38-year-old, from Breightmet, died 14 months after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Fundraisers were held after his death and continued this year to mark the 10th anniversary.

They included a football match against the Tansy Green pub, a tug of war competition, sponsored walks and pub crawls.

A total of £2,000 was raised and presentations were made to four good causes during a family fun day at the pub on Saturday.

Money was also given to Macmillan Cancer Care, The Christie and Bolton Hospice.

Mr Jones’ son, Gareth Jones, aged 30, from Astley Bridge, said: “It feels good that money is being raised in his memory. It’s good that his friends still remember him and are doing something for him.”

Pub landlady, Gillian Ireton, added: “Alan died very young and was one our regulars. It’s such a local pub that the same group of people are still coming in.

“He was a very popular lad and was really involved in organising the Sunday league football. There are pictures of him all over the pub.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who has taken part and raised money. I hope that people will continue to support our fundraising ventures.”

More fundraisers are now being planned in memory of Mr Jones, with the first one set to be a fancy dress event at Halloween.
