A SPORTS tournament held in memory of two men who died of cancer hit the target for two charities.

A total of 12 teams took part in the third annual five-a-side football competition on Saturday at Philips High School in Whitefield.

And for the first time, organisers from the Paulo Franko Trust also held a netball competition, which attracted a further 12 teams and was run by two representatives from Netball England.

Players travelled from across the region to take part and the winners were football team Stoned Roses and netball team Woo Woos, both from south Manchester.

Afterwards, presentations and a barbecue were held at the Parkfield Inn, in Park Lane, Whitefield.

The winning teams were given the Paulo Franko Cup, in memory of Paul Casey and Frank Gordon. More than £1,200 was raised for Bury Hospice and Cancer Research UK in honour of the two men, surpassing the amount of raised at the two previous events.

Nicola Casey, daughter of Mr Casey, who lived in Cotswold Crescent, Walshaw, said: “The support at the event was really fantastic and the people who came have really caught on to our philosophy of using sport to help cancer-related charities.

“We have exceeded what we raised last year and the previous year. It’s grown every year.

“For next year, people are already talking about us doing a rounders competition or basketball. We are going to expand it.”

Miss Casey thanked Philips High School, the umpires and referees, and everyone else involved in the event.
