Thief swipes handbag as driver sat at traffic lights
AN audacious thief snatched a woman’s handbag from her car as she waited at traffic lights.
Katy Towers was seconds from arriving at the Volkswagen garage in Morris Street, The Haulgh, when a woman opened her near side front door, telling her she had a flat tyre.
The woman then grabbed her handbag from the foot well and ran off — with Miss Towers bravely giving chase.
Miss Towers was waiting to turn right onto Mill Street at the traffic lights in Bury New Road when the incident happened at about 8am.
The 27-year-old, who was driving to get her car serviced, said: “I was stopped in a queue of traffic and I don’t know where the woman came from. I got out of my car and ran after her. She ran down the road and into the underpass. As I ran after her I fell down the stairs leading to the underpass. At first I didn’t realise I had hurt my leg but then I couldn’t walk on it and I spent the afternoon in A&E.”
Miss Towers shouted for people in the underpass to stop the woman and her luckily bag was returned.
She is unsure if the thief dropped the bag or whether a passerby retrieved it.
Only her make-up bag was missing.
Miss Towers, who works at United Utilities in Warrington, was given crutches to help her walk and had to take a few days off work.
Her father, Alan Towers, had been following a short distance behind as he was going to drive her to United Utilities, where he also works.
Miss Towers said: “It’s annoying as I am normally really good at locking my car doors when driving. I am lucky as I had my phone, purse, cash cards, Kindle and iPod in my bag.
“I just want to thank the people who helped me. If they hadn’t been there the woman would have carried on running and I wouldn’t have caught up to her.”
A man driving a Waterflow van helped as the thief had tried to get into his van before snatching Miss Tower’s bag.
The woman is described as being aged early 40s with blonde hair tied back. The incident took place on September 9.
