HOWARD Wayne may have moved to the land of cheeseburgers and hotdogs 35 years ago — but he still cannot get enough of Greenhalgh’s pies when he flies back to visit his brother in Bolton.
Such is the 60-year-old’s love of the Bolton bakery’s produce that his brother Mike greeted him at Manchester Airport with a special Greenhalgh’s welcome home poster.
Howard is now looking forward to spending the next two weeks in the UK with Mike, aged 57, and his sister-in-law Gloria, who live in Pennine Road, Horwich.
Greenhalgh’s agreed to make the poster for Howard, who travelled with partner Hollie Haynie, aged 50, after hearing of his love of the bakery.
Howard said: “I’m a big fan of Greenhalgh’s and when I walked through the airport and saw mine and Hollie’s names on the poster I could not believe it. I’m still really into English food and I miss it when I’m out in the States.”
Howard moved to America 35 years ago and currently lives in Richmond, a suburb of Los Angeles.
And despite living across the Atlantic, it seems his affection for Bolton has never left.
Such is Howard’s love of meat pies that his email address even contains the phrase “meatpieman”.
As well as his love of British food — he admits a penchant for Cornish pasties — he keeps up to date with English football.
“I love to keep up to date with what’s going on.”
Over the past 35 years, Howard has visited the UK five times, bringing his daughters Anna, aged 25, and Emily, aged 24, in 1998 and 2000.
Howard said: “They said they absolutely loved it over here, and that they wanted to move here. California kids wanting to move to England — go figure!”
Sandra Ogden, head of retail and marketing operations at Greenhalgh’s, said: “Howard’s family approached us asking for a special way to welcome him back to the UK, and we thought it was only right to put his name on the poster and give him a special welcome. We were happy to help.”
