Firefighters were called to the empty club, in Edna Road, on Friday night at 10.30pm, and tackled the fire for three hours with appliances.
The community-run club was in the process of trying to secure funding to reopen the facility when it was hit by the arson attack.
Gary Mercer, watch manager at Leigh Fire Station, said: “We were called to the scene at 10.30pm and it took us three hours to extinguish the fire.
“Police are now investigating as we are treating it as arson.
“It’s a real loss to the community and a dangerous situation for the firefighters. It’s a community Labour Club that was trying to get funding to reopen.”
