UPDATE: M61 closed after woman hit by lorry
THE M61 northbound was closed after an accident in which a female pedestrian was hit by a lorry and suffered serious head injuries.
The 38-year-old woman, from Ribbleton, Preston, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital with head injuries after being hit by a vehicle, thought to be a lorry.
She was left with a broken jaw, cheek bone and right arm, and also suffered a bruised lung. She is due to have surgery.
Police are now investigating how the woman came to be on the motorway.
Traffic was diverted through Westhoughton, and the incident caused severe delays before the motorway was reopened at about 10am.
An ambulance was on the scene within five minutes of the accident being reported.
A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: “The female, approximately 30 years old, had suffered significant head injuries and the police were informed.”
