Famous Chilean comedian starts new life - as a waitress in a Bolton restaurant
IN her native Chile comedian Carlita cannot walk down the street without being mobbed.
Her every move is monitored by paparazzi and if she wears a new outfit or has a new boyfriend, it makes national headlines.
But here in Bolton — her new home — she is more likely to be seen delivering a plate of tapas to your table rather than delivering a joke.
Her full name is Carla Guatero and she is now happily working at La Salsa in Bolton town centre.
She is enjoying her new found anonymity for now — but she admits that she would love to make it as a comedian in the UK.
She said: “I wanted to come here because people are friendly. They are nice to me and smile at me, and accept me. And I am not famous here so that is really good although I would like to become famous in England for my comedy.”
Born in Italy to an Italian father and Chilean mother, she has split her time living in the two countries since her parents separated many years ago.
She added: “From being a little girl, I always wanted to perform. Children say they want to be a footballer or a train driver when they grow up — I wanted to be Marilyn Monroe.”
She got her big break working as a singer at a theme park — the comedy act failed to turn up, and Carla took her chance to shine.
Over the last 12 years she has performed on stage and been a TV regular in live shows as well as taking part in reality programmes. Her quick wit and natural bubbly charm made her a national celebrity, but there was always a down side.
She added: “I am not thin and people in Chile want their women thin. They call me fat and make me feel ugly.”
Carla had been to Bolton previously through an ex-boyfriend, and befriended Apo Simsek — the owner of La Salsa restaurants in Bolton and Horwich.
She added: “I was in New York on holiday and Apo rang me and said come to Bolton and be a waitress for me.”
Carla’s new job involves her doing everything in the Higher Bridge Street restaurant from serving to cleaning, but what she really loves is sharing her humour with customers, one table at a time.
“I have a laugh and a joke with the customers,” she giggles.
Mr Simsek said: “People love Carla. She is a very funny lady and I think she could be very famous here. I am going to give her a microphone so everyone can enjoy the fun.”
