A CONCERNED mum says her children are being put in danger along a main road on their way to school — because they have to battle through brambles and nettles.

Carole Butler walks from her home in Slimbridge Close, Breightmet, to Christ Church Ainsworth Primary School with her 10-year-old son Alex, and daughter Hannah, aged seven.

But she believes their safety is at risk as they walk along the narrow footpath in Bury Old Road and past overgrown shrubbery.

The children are regularly scratched by the brambles and nettles, with both suffering scratches on their faces.

Mrs Butler, aged 46, said: “It can be quite hairy. There is traffic coming past and a small amount of pavement to walk along. We are constantly avoiding the shrubbery.

“I tell the children not to walk near the road, but they get prickled. We can only really walk single-file.”

Mrs Butler says she has to contact Bury Council every year to ask it to trim back the brambles and nettles.

This year, she has contacted the council several times but claims she was told the work would not be done by the council.

She says she was told that the owners of the land along Bury Old Road would be contacted and asked to cut back the bushes. But Mrs Butler believes no work has yet taken place and she is urging the council to do something.

She said: “I hope the council doesn’t let the cutbacks put children’s safety in jeopardy.

“Why can’t they come to cut it or do something more permanent, instead of just strimming it?” A council spokesman said: “We have contacted Breightmet Golf Club about this issue and they have advised us they will be carrying out remedial works.

“We are also carrying out remedial works on a strip of council-owned land.”
